Management Student Becomes First Intern at New York Life Houston Office

You never know who you’re going meet and how that interaction could impact your life. That statement is certainly very true for Senior business student Ricardo Sanches.

Sanches’ parents migrated from Mexico in search of a better life for their four children. After graduating high school, he worked for two years to save money so he could attend college full-time. He began his higher education journey at Houston Community College (HCC) then transferred to University of Houston-Downtown to complete his degree in Business Management.

“Making my parents proud is a major goal of mine and I’m sure I’m doing that now, but I know graduating from the university and seeing me walk that stage is something that I don’t think they will soon forget,” said Sanches.

During the Fall 2018 semester, Sanches took advantage of the resources available to business students at Marilyn Davies College of Business and attended one of the Career Development Center’s Career Fairs.

He struck up a conversation with a group of people, that happened to include the new Dean of Marilyn Davies College of Business, Dr. Charles Gengler. Dean Gengler then introduced Sanches to Gus Cuellar, Partner at New York Life. That introduction and conversation subsequently led to Sanches interviewing for the position and receiving an offer to be a College Agent at New York Life’s Houston office.

Sanches said that he attributes his business courses as the main reason for him being prepared for the interviews for the internship.

“I was taught by great professors and retained information required to succeed in the real world,” said Sanches.

The whole process leading up to the interview and securing the internship has been eye opening for Sanches and he’s ready to make the most of this new challenge.

“It means I get an opportunity to prove myself to others of my work ethic and hunger to learn,” said Sanches. It means my parents struggles were for something greater than themselves and that is the most amazing goal to me.”

He said it’s a great accomplishment to be the first intern but that’s not the end goal, just the starting point. “I wanted to be recognized in the future for the accomplishments I’ve completed for NYL. I want to set the bar high for future interns to come,” said Sanches.
